MS Word 2000

A minor problem: Microsoft Word 2000 incorrectly regards SGML-encoded text documents as HTML and attempts to display them as such. This can be easily corrected by changing one setting in the Tools --> Options menu.

The procedure:

Open Word 2000 (or Word 97). Be sure a blank document is active.

Click Tools --> Options... and select the General tab. One of the options on this tab is Confirm conversion at open. Place a check in the box next to this option and click OK. Word is now set to prompt the user before converting non-Word file formats.

For example, when a user opens an SGML-encoded text document, Word will show a dialogue box with the message "Convert file from:" and a list of file formats. If Word is correctly detecting the text format, it will automatically highlight "Text-Only." If Word incorrectly identifies the document, "HTML" will be highlighted. To correct the application the user simply scrolls to the top of the lists and chooses "Text-Only" and clicks OK.
